No Backlash No Problem – Creating Zero Backlash Gearboxes

In servo applications, minimizing backlash improves overall performance including accuracy, repeatability, vibration and noise.  As a result, gearbox manufacturers focus on minimizing backlash when creating components for today’s automation and motion control industry.  However, Zero backlash cannot be achieved when using traditional gears as there needs to be some clearance in order for the gearbox to rotate.

In mechanical engineering, backlash, or free play, is a clearance or lost motion in a mechanism caused by gaps between the parts …. It can be seen when the direction of movement is reversed and the slack or lost motion is taken up before the reversal of motion is complete. It results in movement of the input shaft with no movement of the output shaft.

All gearboxes that utilize traditional spur, helical, or planetary gearing will have some backlash although manufacturers have been able to minimize this down to 2-3 arc minutes in a single stage.   Therefore at ratios higher than 10: 1, a second stage must be added which further increases the backlash.
